The word maja is a feminine term for a woman from the lower parts of Spanish society espeacily those in Madrid, they dressed in very elbaorate clothing and had a certain way of speaking and acting. Later on it also came to mean a pretty or nice looking lady. The woman leaning on the rail is the Maja while Celestia is the grubby old woman in the background.
