Caravaggio loved to paint in detail and though he didn't paint many still lifes the ones he did show much rich detail. A good example is this painting called Basket of Fruit if the viewer looks closely at the apple, along with its rich red colour is a hole where a worm or insect has bored. Could Caravaggio be making a statement about life within this painting, that although life can seem to be perfect there is always something nasty within, that is for you the viewer to decide. Caravaggio has painted almost every detail of the basket and the shadows within it as well as the leaves and other fruit in the composition. He painted not only with painstaking detail but also true to life so the leaves would look wilted and withered if the composition had stood for a while. This is unlike many artists who were it seems obsessed with making not only their paintings perfect but their subjects look perfect too.
