This image is typical of postexpressionism by excentuating form and line the artist has created a visual display that goes beyond the mere image of a woman walking up the path to her local church. Van Gogh has used colour to make the church the focal point of the painting, in fact if the viewer looks closly they will see that the majority of the bold brush strokes lead the eye in towards the church. The Church itslef is painted in a simplistic way, without any fussy details for example the clock has no face.
Colour abounds in this image from the deep blue of the sky which is echoed in the windows of the church, to the vivid greens of the grass in front of the building, Van Gogh has adopted an almost poinitlistic style for the image which shows the influences of Seurat and Pissaro, and, yet the influence of Impressionism can also be seen in the sky and the church itself. Van Gogh like many artists borrowed other artists techniques to refine his own.
